Schools plan $3M in renovationa

In the spring of 2010, Danbury Local Schools will embark on a $3 million renovation project to improve our customer service for our residents, safety for our students, and change the learning environment to prepare our students and staff for the 21st century. Learning outcomes being dictated by the state and federal governments. This project will incorporate new and more energy efficient technologies into our current district plan to help us meet both the current and future educational needs of our students.

The following renovations will occur:

* Beginning in June, the district will start our HB 264 project. This project will allow the district to become more energy efficient in our lighting, heating, and air conditioning. Bonds issued for this project, will be paid back with estimated district energy savings. Additionally, the district will complete the air conditioning of the building and provide a back-up generator to allow for year round use for both the school and community functions and security in case of future power outages. The district intends to use Permanent Improvement and General Funds to help offset the $1.2 million dollar cost of this segment of the scheduled project.

* Phase two of the renovation project will be the demolition of the existing utility building and construction of a replacement building as well as paving and grounds improvements to commence this spring, weather permitting. The renovation, designed by MKC Architects and Designers, will improve student safety and will be financed by a $1 million loan from the First National Bank of Bellevue at 4.35 percent.

* Phase three of the project will be the renovation of classrooms and office space to better ensure the safety and educational needs of our students. A new entrance for the high school and central office will be constructed at the east side of the building and adjoining classrooms will be remodeled to meet 21st century learning requirements. Other renovations will include an expanded computer lab, a language learning lab, and the beginning implementation of a district wireless network. This phase will also be financed from the loan mentioned above.

In Phase four of our project, Danbury will be going "Green" with the construction of a wind turbine. We will be installing a wind turbine to provide energy savings for the district and promote global energy awareness. Funds for this project will be provided by state and federal energy grants.

The Danbury Local School District is planning for the future with our students, faculty and community in mind. This renovation project will help improve child safety concerns, provide long term energy savings, and provide better customer service for our educational community. Because of prudent fiscal responsibility, this project will be completed without a further financial tax burden to our community and prepare our students for the workforce of tomorrow.
